Hornsby Shire Council has elected a new deputy mayor, with Councillor Gurdeep Singh taking up the position after being elected unopposed at last night’s meeting.
“It is with humble pride I accept the position and am pleased to be in a position to better serve the community,” Councillor Singh said after the meeting.
“I look forward to assisting the mayor in his duties and to gaining increased experience in Council’s operations.”
Councillor Singh has been on Hornsby Shire Council since 2012, when he was elected to represent B Ward.
“It’s a sign of his excellent work that he has been elected to deputy mayor during his first term,” Hornsby Shire Mayor Steve Russell said.
“He is passionately committed to the people he represents and shares many of my personal goals, such as cutting red tape while also preserving local heritage.
“I very much look forward to working with him.”
Councillor Singh is a civil engineer who migrated to Australia 23 years ago and is a prominent member of the nation’s Indian and Sikh communities.
He takes the role of deputy mayor from Councillor Nathan Tilbury, whose one-year term has expired.
“I would like to thank Councillor Tilbury for his hard work throughout the year,” Mayor Russell said.
