Hornsby mall grassed

An oasis on Florence Street

Here’s a lesson on how to turn a drab corner of Hornsby Shopping Mall in to an attractive oasis – just add grass! In a bold move, Hornsby mall has been grassed again for summer.

The eastern end of Florence Street in the shopping mall has always seemed a little forgotten, or neglected to me. Yes, there is a bank, a picture framer and a hair dresser but there is also a long featureless wall of Hornsby Westfield and no cafes on this short stretch of land.

It’s not that this area is bad; it’s just a little boring.

But now it has been covered in a layer of artificial grass with half a dozen benches under the shady tress and it has magically transformed the area in to a little oasis which is particularly welcome on a hot sunny weekday afternoon.

This is a good initiative. Today I saw mothers and babies playing on the ground, young couples chatting and workers taking a relaxing break from the busy day.

How to complete the mix? Add some local social activities!

Saturday 1 November – Spirit of Sydney Choir are performing at 2:30pm

Tuesday 4 November – CWA are holding a fundraising BBQ for Melbourne Cup. Join the ladies in the mall with your fascinators and hats for a scone or sausage sizzle.

Thursday 6 November – Rags to Runway catwalk show promoting and supporting local designers.

Saturday 8 November – Santa arrives! Celebrate in the mall as Santa rolls into Hornsby before he takes his place in Westfield for the lead up to Christmas.
