Rugby was the winner at Leichhardt #2 Oval on Saturday with the reigning 2013 co-premiers Balmain playing Knox Rugby Club.
The Knox boys were victorious in 1sts and Colts, and Balmain held 2nds, 3rds and 4ths. All games were hard fought, in particular 1sts and Colts where both games were in the balance until the final whistle.
Great defence from the Knox teams proved the winning formula, especially as Balmain threw everything bar the kitchen sink at them in their drive to cross the line.
The referees awarded the Man of the Match to Knox prop, Nick Meyer, in Colts and Knox 2nd rower Andy Barham in 1st Grade.
The first grade match had a good crowd in attendance and they witnessed a hard fought match.
The first half had some good open rugby from both sides with Knox just ahead at the half time whistle.
After the break Balmain came out looking stronger than ever and pushed Knox’s forward pack hard. Using pick and drive they made good ground up the field, but Knox defended well and stopped them from getting over the try line.
Knox won the match 17:14 in the end, which is a great result, given that this is the first time the 1st Grade side has beaten Balmain at this level.
The win has given Knox a huge confidence boost for the rest of the season, now they know they can mix it with the big boys.
Next Saturday Knox plays Beecroft at Lofberg Oval, West Pymble.
