Lindfield Sweep Knox United Aside

Frantic games see Lindfield beat Knox United 2:0

Knox United has been doing it tough this year and was starting this match one place from the bottom of the division looking for their first win. Lindfield’s Premier Division side were the Campion of Champions in 2013 and were always going to be a tough side for Knox United in this match.

DSC_9605The game started frantically with a lot of end to end action. Both sides had early opportunities to score but it was Lindfield that managed to capitalise in the tenth minute with a goal scored off a neat one-two leaving the Knox goalie on the back foot and the goal mouth open for a simple goal.

Both sides had good passing play, but as soon as the ball went long it was intercepted by the other side, leading to a continual turn-over of possession and no long periods of play in the first half. Knox defended well and continually interrupted the disciplined play of Lindfield.

Both sides continued at the frantic pace and both goalies had to work hard. Lindfield narrowly missed a second chance for goal rattling the right post.

Half time score saw Lindfield in the lead 1:0

The second half started in Knox’s favour and after a long period of building play, narrowly missed a chance to even the score. Then the play turned in favour of Lindfield and another one-two from their forwards left the Knox goalie with nowhere to go and the score was 2:0.

DSC_9634Late in the second half Lindfield substituted on another striker who pressed the offside position continuously, getting called for his position three times in the first five minutes on the field. But fresh legs brought fresh energy and the frantic pace moved up another gear for the remaining twenty minutes.

I was impressed to see how little pushing and shoving there was between the teams, something which can mar games at this level and bring a lot of free kicks and disruption to the flow of the game. That was not the case today and the game was fast and moved easily. There would have been some very tired players at the end of the session.

Lindfield had the edge in terms of discipline today and that gave them a convincing win in the end, sweeping Knox aside 2:0
