The Old Civic is an American style diner on the car park side of the Forestway shopping centre.
From the outside The Old Civic looks a treat with its retro styling and open space and inside it has typical modern Americana fare; burgers, burritos, hot dogs as well as a the ubiquitous pulled-pork roll that any self-respecting modern diner needs to have these days.
I have had the chance to eat there twice and it is a busy and popular place.
Child-friendly with excellent Campo’s Coffee, the place has become a destination for young mums and busy weekday workers. I do like Campo’s Coffee and these guys make a good brew.
As I walked up to The Old Civic there was a bit of a huddle around the large open window looking in to the café/service area as people waited patiently for their coffees. That must mean they are doing something right as there is a Gloria Jeans within fifty metres and at least four other cafes just inside the shopping centre.
Mind you, from the look of the young thirty-somethings waiting patiently for their coffee, I don’t think they’re the type of customer that frequents the other cafes in the centre.
Inside the counter service was quick, friendly and efficient and my pulled-pork roll on Panini arrived without fuss. Full with loads of good quality, well cooked pork and decent coleslaw it was worth the $15.50 and the pickled gherkin and crisps just added to the Americana feel.
My dining partner selected the burrito and it was truly huge and packed with flavour. A big meal for a big appetite.
There are some good spots to sit by the window, looking out over the carpark. The window is a great spot to do some people watching while you eat. If you prefer to sit inside there is a choice of regular tables to sit and chat or a large counter and stools – a great place if you’re flying solo for lunch.
The Old Civic Café is a busy, bustling place but I have always managed to find a seat without needing to wait and it’s worth the trip to have a decent coffee and some Americana food.
