Taiwanese Street Food – Xaochi

Hu's Inn, Archer Street, Chatswood

Hu’s Inn on Archer Street in Chatswood is a Taiwanese Restaurant specialising in Xaochi or snack-style food and that makes it a great place to stop for lunch or a light dinner. Xaochi is a style of Chinese and Taiwanese food which is similar in nature to the Spanish Tapas consisting of smallish snack-style combination of dishes.

So this is Taiwanese street food. There are lots of choices, most of which would work well in combination with each other.

Hu's InnHu’s Inn is set out as a small restaurant with simple dark-wood tables and nice, friendly staff who are willing to make selecting your meal simple.

I chose the business lunch where you select a rice dish, a main dish, an accompaniment and a drink. All of which come as a package for $9.90. I selected the Traditional Taiwanese Pork Rice with the Salt & Pepper Chicken, Pickles and an iced Green Tea.

I could have selected Pork and noodles or a couple of combinations of vegetarian rice or noodles. The mains included chicken cutlet, wings, pork cutlet, tofu, corn or mushrooms. So, there are a huge number of delicious permutations and combinations.

The Traditional Taiwanese Pork Rice used small grain rice and a good strong pork topping. The flavour was full and complex. The Salt & Pepper Chicken was freshly cooked with a hint of five spice and the pickles were fresh and spicy. All three dishes worked together well.

The food arrived quickly as we sat overlooking Archer Street, which afforded us some good people watching opportunities as we ate our meal. This is a great way to take a little time out from the bustle of daily Chatswood life.

Hu’s Inn is well worth a visit for lunch or dinner. Their extensive menu can be supplemented with their range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

I will be going back to sample their Sweet Potato Fries with Plum Sauce alongside a nice cool beverage late one afternoon…

Hu’s Inn is at 84 Archer Street, Chatswood.
