Valentine’s Day

How to enjoy the most romantic day of the year

Love is in the air and so is the opportunity to impress your significant other with a thoughtful and passionate plan for Valentine’s Day.

The origins of St Valentine’s Day are shrouded in mystery but many tales agree that the holiday is based on the Ancient Roman Priest and Martyr St Valentine. Valentine lived in an era of great social oppression and as such marriage was outlawed for soldiers. This was done in the belief that unmarried soldiers fought better because they didn’t have a wife to worry about. The Romans were a charming bunch.

Valentine objected to this ruling and began marrying soldiers in secret against the will of Emperor Claudius. Once discovered Valentine was imprisoned and tortured for his crimes against the state and suffered a three-part execution, which included a beating, stoning and decapitation. Although he met a gruesome end there are a few stories from his time in prison that culminate into part of the traditions that we follow today.

During his judgement Valentine is said to have prayed with and healed one of the judge’s blind daughters so effectively that he converted the judge to Christianity. In his final letter to the girl it is told that the words “from your Valentine” were inscribed and that is where we get the famous phrase.

Saint Valentine was a man that embodied the true power of love and its importance to humanity and he sacrificed himself serving his cause. So when your partner complains about you leaving the toilet seat up or down remind them that Valentine died so that you could even share that seat in holy matrimony.

Now that we know for whom this day is named here are a few places to go and things to do to commemorate yours and the patron saint of lover’s special day.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to show just how much you care about your loved one and with a few of these ideas coupled with some genuine love and personal touches you could have a fantastic day. If not, then I pray you at least remember your Anniversary or even the Birthday of your partner.

Modern technology is a lot more advanced and I’m sure three part executions are very out-dated and don’t beget satisfaction until there are at least seven. So get thinking and may your day be filled with love!
