West Pymble has had a mixed season so far this year, beating Lane Cove 5:0 two weeks ago but suffering a thrashing from Lindfield 6:1 last week.
Knox United are yet to win a game and the last two weeks have seem them go down 2:0 to Lindfield two weeks ago and 3:0 to Willoughby Dalleys last week.
So both teams hit the park looking for a decent win that would steady their ships.
Last week I watched West Pymble who seemed unsettled and fractured as a side. Right from their warm-up this evening you could see that things were going to be different; they were tight, coordinated and settled.
From the kick-off, the game moved rapidly from end-to-end. There were many speculative passes from both sides and few periods of settled, passing-play. However, West Pymble had the upper hand with longer periods of possession, more accuracy in their passes and several breaks down the right wing with a speculative cross in to the goal area. This tactic paid off with goal to West Pymble only five minutes in to the first half.
This was the confidence boost West Pymble needed, settling in to a good playing rhythm for the rest of the match. Knox United spent most of the game defending the West Pymble attack; however they did have some good periods of attacking play but were unable to convert the effort in to goals.
Apart from the one goal to West Pymble, neither goalie had to work too hard in the first half due to the consistent efforts from their defenders.
Half time score 1:0 to West Pymble.
The second half looked very similar to the first half, with the ball constantly moving from end to end of the pitch, there were some longer periods of possession in particular from West Pymble moving the ball around and testing the Knox United defence.
However, Knox United managed to grab the ball against the run of play, move it out to the right wing, cross in to the middle and score; only to have it disallowed for off-side. But, being the troopers that they are, they made an almost complete replica of the move five minutes later, but beating the off-side trap this time to score. One-all deep in to the second half.
The joy of seeing a settled West Pymble side this week meant that they did not get rattled, doubled their effort and worked confidently with the ball, eventually seizing an opportunity and putting the ball in the back of the net to win the match 2:1
